Each of us have a personal auto pilot that will affect the level of success we achieve in our life? I first heard this statement at a self development seminar I attended more than 20 years ago so I guess it?s time to dust it off and represent it to a new audience.
Here?s how it works: A pilot has control of Boeing 747 as it hurtles along the runway picking up enough speed to lift this giant aircraft from the ground; when the aircraft reaches the required speed he allows it to become airborne. There is never a thought in his mind questioning: ?What do I do next?? This is because before he even sat in the cockpit for this flight a detailed fight plan was lodged and approved so providing everything is going as planned his next actions will be something like this:
- Climb to the height of 10,000 feet on the current heading. - Alter course to a heading 297 degrees. - When on 297 degrees climb from 10,000 to 35,000 feet. - At 35,000 alter course to 315 degrees.
The pilot doesn?t actually sit their making all these alterations because before take-off he and the co-pilot have already programmed each of these instructions into the auto pilot. Once the wheels have been retracted and flight trim attained he will flick the aircraft onto auto pilot to follow these instructions.
A couple of hours into the flight the pilot may receive a message warning of heavy turbulence ahead at 35,000 feet and instruct him to bring the plane down to 28,000 feet. He will take over the controls and take the flight to the lower altitude. When he receives instructions to return to his pre-arranged flight path he simply flicks the auto back into action and it will resume the course of 315 degrees and climb back to 35,000 feet.
We each have our own built in auto-pilot, sometimes known as comfort zone. My wife is a typical example she has the feeling that unless there is $2,000 in her bank account she is broke. That?s fine and a very good, healthy trait. However, if a bank statement arrives and she finds a balance of $3,000 she is ecstatic and treats herself to a $1,000 shopping spree. This relates to her built in flight path being $2K then she gets a warning of turbulence ahead and takes the reins to $3K where she spends happily until she notices the account is just above or just below her beloved $2K. Then panic sets in and I?m on cheap food for a week or two.
As beautiful and lovely as my wife is (Score 53 Bonus Brownie points for that) she has no hope of ever succeeding in business with her auto mindset. To succeed in business that comfort zone figure needs to be many hundred thousand or million dollars. People are capable of changing their personal auto pilot but most choose not to because, like my wife, they?re perfectly happy in their personal comfort zone.
Because many readers, and subscribers, of this website have an interest in making extra income online this article should be read in conjunction with our articles on goal and outcome setting because this comfort zone is the major reason why so many attempt business and fail.
